An eye exam is a battery of tests performed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist assessing vision and ability to focus on and discern objects, as well as other tests and eye exam evaluations pertaining to the eyes. All people should schedule a periodic and thorough eye exam as part of routine primary care, especially since many eye diseases are silent or asymptomatic.

 A comprehensive examination consists of numerous tests and can vary depending on your age. We begin our exam by determining your unique visual needs and concerns. This includes a complete medical, ocular and family history. We then measure your level of vision using your existing glasses or contact lenses. An external exam and an evaluation of the movements of the eye are performed. In addition, we review the response of the pupils to light as well as health of the eyelids and surrounding tissues.

Our complete internal exam screens for various eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Many systemic health problems such as diabetes have ocular side effects that can permanently impair vision. A refraction is performed to determine your spectacle or contact lens prescription. Since many patients have varied visual demands, our doctors can recommend special lenses to help with your unique visual needs.
